Who IS Navajo Sheepardess?

From the late 1950s through the 1970s my mother, prominent Escondido artist Alta Smith, donated over ten paintings to the City of Escondido and Palomar Hospital for the purpose of promoting the arts in the City Escondido and throughout North County. One of these paintings is an oil on canvas portrait of a young Navajo woman holding a lamb and titled Navajo Sheepherdess. For many years this painting hung on the walls of the Escondido Public Library's Children's Room, then later moved to a wall in the circulation area. My family and I took great pleasure in knowing that this lovely portrait of a young Native American woman was on public display and could be enjoyed, not only by my family and me, but by the many patrons who visited the library daily.
